How to become a remote graphic designer in the Philippines
What remote graphic design work looks like, the skills clients check, how to build a portfolio clients hire from, and how to land your first job.
Clients hire remote designers from their portfolio. No listing on DayShift, our job site for remote roles with clients in Singapore and Asia, has asked for a design degree. This guide is built from the graphic design role we've posted and the 16 social media roles, since 12 of those ask for design too (open and closed, as of 6 October 2026).
What a remote graphic designer makes for a client in a week
Our graphic design role was with a real estate business, part-time at 20 hours a week for a first 3 months. The client listed the work like this:
- Social media graphics, banners and ad designs, in line with the brand guide.
- Presentation decks, one-pagers and other print and sales materials.
- The same design resized for each platform and placement.
- Photos edited, retouched and colour-corrected for campaigns.
- Brand templates kept up to date, and the design files organised so anyone can find them.
- Changes from feedback, finished by the agreed deadline.
- Some basic video edits.
Here's how that could fill a week: a set of posts for a new property listing, the same posts resized into Stories and a banner, a short deck for a client meeting, then a round of changes on Friday.
The social media roles want design for posts and carousels. One e-commerce client selling bags wanted product visuals for its campaigns.
The skills clients check before they hire a designer
Here's what the listings asked for:
- Your portfolio, first. Our design listing asked for digital and print work.
- Photo editing: retouching and colour correction.
- Working inside a brand guide: its fonts, colours and templates.
- One design resized for many placements without breaking.
- Taking feedback and revising by a deadline.
- Basic video, for some roles.
Our design listing didn't name software. Retouching and colour correction need a photo editor such as Photoshop, and two of our social media listings named Photoshop. Five named Canva, which has a free plan. If you want free lessons first, TESDA's online program has a Visual Graphic Design NC III course.
How to build a design portfolio clients will hire from
Build it from practice briefs that look like what clients actually post:
- Pick two or three kinds of work from real listings, like social posts, an ad set and a one-pager.
- Make up a practice brand, like a cafe or a property agent, and write it a one-page brand guide with a logo, two fonts and three colours.
- Design six pieces inside that guide, so a client sees you can stay on brand.
- Resize one design for three placements: a feed post, a Story and a banner.
- Redesign one real local flyer as practice, and show the old and new side by side. Label it as a practice project.
- Under each piece, write the brief in one line and what you decided.
Keep only your best work, in one PDF or one shared folder with a single link. Ten strong pieces beat thirty mixed ones.
How to land your first remote design job without paying anyone
You should never pay to get a design job, whether someone calls it an application fee, a training fee or a deposit for software.
It's free to apply on DayShift, and every role shows its pay before you apply. Our clients are in Singapore and Asia, on the same clock as Manila, so the work is day shift. Roles on DayShift today pay SGD 5 to 8 an hour or SGD 400 to 1,200 a month (checked 6 October 2026). The pay guide at /pay shows the range for each role.
Here's what happens after you apply:
- You apply with your CV and answers to a few questions. Put your portfolio link at the top of the CV.
- We review it, and if you fit the role, we invite you to a short interview.
- If you're shortlisted, the client interviews you.
- If you're hired, your work login arrives by email.
Expect to walk a client through your own work. Our practice page has three design questions, like "Walk me through one design in your portfolio, from brief to final" and "How do you handle a client who keeps asking for changes?" Answer them out loud at /interview-practice?role=graphic-designer.
Design roles are listed at /jobs/graphic-designer when they're open. Social media roles that need design are at /jobs/social-media, and our guide to becoming a social media manager shows what those clients want (/blog/how-to-become-a-social-media-manager).
What to avoid: fees, and free work dressed up as a test
Watch for these before you say yes:
- Anyone who asks you to pay to apply, train or start. Our guide to legit work from home jobs lists the other warning signs (/blog/legit-work-from-home-jobs-philippines).
- A "test" that's a full campaign. One small design is a test. A month of posts they'll use is a job, so ask for pay first.
- A client who expects unlimited changes. Agree on how many rounds of changes come with each design before you start.
- Images and fonts you don't have the right to use. Use your own photos or ones you have permission to use, so the client can post your work.
Our own rule, from our homepage: we never ask you to pay, whether it's an application fee, a placement fee or a training fee.

Questions
Do I need a degree to become a remote graphic designer?
No listing on DayShift has asked for one. Clients look at your portfolio, so put your effort there.
Is Canva enough to get hired?
For some social media roles, yes. Five of our social media listings named Canva. For retouching and colour correction you'll also want a photo editor such as Photoshop.
Can I become a graphic designer with no clients yet?
Yes. Build a practice brand, design six pieces in it, resize one for three placements, and show a before and after. Put them behind one link and add it to your CV.
How much does a remote graphic designer earn?
It depends on the role and the hours. Roles on DayShift today pay SGD 5 to 8 an hour or SGD 400 to 1,200 a month (checked 6 October 2026), and every listing shows its pay.
