Duties to write on your resume

Start each line with what you did. Keep the ones you've really done.

No work experience yet? Use these lines for training shop practice, school projects or helping a relative's repair shop, and say where.

A resume objective you can adapt

Motivated welder with hands-on training in arc welding, ready to read blueprints, follow safety rules and deliver clean, strong welds on every project.

Skills employers ask for

What the interview asks

  1. What types of welding have you done? Name the processes you know, like arc or gas metal arc, and the metals you worked on.
  2. How do you check that a weld is good? Say you look for cracks, gaps and holes, and you redo anything weak.
  3. What safety gear do you wear and why? List your helmet, gloves, apron and boots, and say what each one protects you from.
  4. Can you read a blueprint? Be honest about your level. Describe a part you built from a drawing.

How to get hired

  1. Most posts ask for at least a senior high school diploma, or proof of welding training or experience.
  2. Consider the TESDA national certificate Manual Metal Arc Welding (MMAW) NC II or Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) NC II. Many employers like to see one.
  3. Prepare a resume, a valid ID, an NBI clearance, your SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG and TIN numbers, and a medical certificate.
  4. Apply online, through a recruiter or at the company gate. Many shops run walk-in hiring.
  5. Expect a skills test where you weld a sample piece, plus a short interview.

What the work is like

You work with heat, sparks and noise, often in a hot shop or outdoors. The hard part is holding a steady hand for long stretches in tight spots.

Questions

Do I need experience to work as a welder?

Not always. Many shops hire trainees who finished a welding course, then teach you their own methods.

What should I study to become a welder?

A short welding course at a training center is the usual route. Look for one that covers arc welding and blueprint reading.

Is welding work part-time?

Most welder jobs are full-time, but some shops hire for single projects or short contracts.
