How to become a virtual assistant from home, step by step

What a virtual assistant does, the skills real VA job posts ask for, what you need at home, and how to get your first VA job with no experience.

Most guides on how to become a virtual assistant end with a course to buy. This one is built from real job posts instead. We run DayShift, a job site for remote roles with clients in Singapore and Asia, and everything below comes from the 30 roles open on our board on 6 October 2026.

Virtual assistant meaning: what you'd actually do all day

A virtual assistant, or VA, is a person who does office work for a business from somewhere else, usually from home on their own computer. The client talks to you by chat, email or video call, and pays you per hour or per month.

In job posts, a VA is always a person. Siri and Google Assistant get called virtual assistants too, but nobody hires them.

What you do all day depends on the role. Here's what the open roles on DayShift asked for:

Most of these roles are part-time. Of the 30 open roles, 23 were part-time, and 14 asked for about 4 hours a day or 20 hours a week.

The virtual assistant skills real job posts ask for

You don't need a list of 25 soft skills. These are the skills our clients actually wrote into their posts:

None of the 30 posts asked for a VA certificate. You pick these skills up by using the tools, and our guide to virtual assistant training lists a free course for each one (/blog/virtual-assistant-training).

What you need to work from home before you apply

You don't need expensive gear. You need four things, and a client may ask about any of them in the interview:

How to become a virtual assistant with no experience, in four steps

No VA experience is common, and it isn't the same as no experience at all. If you've worked in a call center, a shop or an office, you've already done parts of this job.

  1. Pick one role, whichever of admin, social media, video editing or telemarketing is closest to work you've done. Read five open posts for it and write down the tools that keep coming up.
  2. Learn those tools for free. Google, Microsoft, Canva and TESDA all have free lessons.
  3. Make one sample of the work and save it as a link. An admin VA can build a tidy customer spreadsheet, a social media VA can design five posts for a real local shop, and a video editor can cut a 30-second clip.
  4. Write a CV that starts with the tasks you can do, then the tools, then your past jobs, with the sample link at the top.

Some roles do want experience, and they say so in the post: on our board, five of the 30 roles ask for 2 years or more. The other 25 don't set a number, so read every line of a post before you apply.

How to land your first VA job without paying anyone

You should never pay to get a VA job, whether someone calls it an application fee, a training fee or a fee to be matched with a client. Our guide to legit work from home jobs shows how to spot the people who ask (/blog/legit-work-from-home-jobs-philippines).

On DayShift, every listing shows its pay before you apply. Roles on DayShift today pay SGD 5 to 8 an hour or SGD 400 to 1,200 a month (checked 6 October 2026).

Here's what happens after you apply:

  1. You apply with your CV and answers to a few questions.
  2. We review it, and if you fit the role, we invite you to a short interview.
  3. If you're shortlisted, the client interviews you.
  4. If you're hired, your work login arrives by email.

Start with the roles that match your pick, like admin assistant (/jobs/admin-assistant) or video editor (/jobs/video-editor), or see every open role at /jobs.

Questions

What is a virtual assistant?

A person who does office work for a business remotely, usually from home. That can be email and calendars, customer records, social media, video editing or calls, done on your own computer while you talk to the client by chat, email and video.

Can I become a virtual assistant with no experience?

Yes. Pick one role, learn its tools with free lessons, make one sample of the work, and apply to roles that don't ask for years of experience. The ones that do will say so in the post.

Do I need to pay for a VA course first?

No. Free lessons from Google, Microsoft, Canva and TESDA cover the tools most posts ask for. And never pay an employer or agency to get hired.

Can I work as a VA using only my phone?

Not for most roles. You'll often have a spreadsheet, a CRM and a video call open at once, which needs a laptop or desktop.

How much does a virtual assistant earn?

It depends on the role and the hours. Roles on DayShift today pay SGD 5 to 8 an hour or SGD 400 to 1,200 a month (checked 6 October 2026), and every listing shows its pay.
