Virtual assistant training without paying a training fee
Free virtual assistant courses from TESDA, Google, Microsoft, HubSpot, Canva and Alison: what each teaches, which VA job it fits, and the fees to refuse.
You can learn most of what a VA job post asks for without paying anyone. We read the 30 roles open on DayShift on 6 October 2026, listed the tools they named, and matched each one to a free course. We opened every course below on 6 October 2026, and each one was free to start that day.
Six free virtual assistant courses, and what each one teaches
1. The TESDA online program
TESDA's own site, e-tesda.gov.ph, describes the program as free online courses for the skills of Filipino workers. You make a free account to enroll. For VA work, these are the ones to open first:
- Content Creation (Social Media) Level III: four modules on planning, making and posting social media content, from Introduction to Content Creation to Propagating Content.
- Digital Marketing Level III: six modules, from building a marketing funnel to reading the data from a campaign.
- Visual Graphic Design NC III: seven modules that start with logo design and move on to print, user interface and product packaging.
- Job Ready Courses: short courses on Impactful Writing Skills, Self-Presentation, Professionalism and Customer Centricity.
2. Alison's free VA course
Alison's Working as a Virtual Assistant is a free online course, listed at 1.5 to 3 hours. It covers the types of VA work and the tools you'll need, plus how to manage clients and keep their data safe. If you want one course on how VA work works before you pick a role, start here.
3. Google's free Workspace guides
The Google Workspace Learning Center has free guides and cheat sheets for Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets and Meet. Admin roles on our board ask for Google Calendar, Drive and Sheets by name, so this is the place to start if you want admin work.
4. Microsoft's free Excel lessons
Microsoft's Excel help and learning pages are free, from Get started to Formulas and functions. Two full-time admin roles open on 6 October asked for advanced Excel and Google Sheets, especially formulas.
5. HubSpot's social media course
HubSpot Academy's Social Media Certification Course is free, with a certification at the end, and teaches you to plan and run social media for a business. HubSpot lists more free courses next to it, on Instagram marketing, Facebook marketing and Facebook ads.
6. Canva's short design courses
Canva Design School has free short courses, some with a shareable certificate, like Work smarter with AI and Meet Canva's Visual Suite, at about an hour each. Three of the social media and content roles on our board named Canva in the post.
Match the course to the job post
Don't take all six. Pick the job first, then the course that teaches its tools:
- Admin VA: the Google Workspace Learning Center and Microsoft's Excel lessons, then the Alison course for client habits (open admin roles are at /jobs/admin-assistant).
- Social media VA: HubSpot's social media course, Canva Design School, and TESDA's Content Creation modules. See the roles at /jobs/social-media.
- Graphic designer: TESDA's Visual Graphic Design modules and Canva. Roles are at /jobs/graphic-designer.
- Telemarketing: TESDA's Customer Centricity and Interpersonal Skills courses, then practice calls out loud with a friend. Roles are at /jobs/telemarketing.
When a paid course makes sense, and when it doesn't
A paid course can be worth it when it gives you something the free ones don't, like a mentor who checks your work every week. It's rarely worth it for tools the free courses above already teach.
Before you pay, ask who checks your work, and whether you can see the full lesson list first. If the course promises you a job, walk away. Nobody can promise that.
Never pay a training fee to start a job
A course you choose to buy is your own decision. A "training fee" that an employer asks for before or after hiring you is different: it's a common sign of a scam. Real employers don't charge you to start work.
DayShift's own policy, word for word from our homepage:
We never ask you to pay: no application fee, no placement fee, no training fee. If anyone asks you for money in our name, it isn't us.
Our guide to legit work from home jobs in the Philippines lists the other warning signs (/blog/legit-work-from-home-jobs-philippines).
How to show clients what you learned
A certificate tells a client you finished a course. A sample shows them you can do the work, so make one small thing after each course and put the links at the top of your CV:
- After the Google Sheets lessons, a sample customer list with filters and a formula that totals the orders.
- After Canva Design School, five posts for a real local business, shared as one link.
- After the HubSpot course, a one-page posting plan for a month.
Then apply. Every role on DayShift shows its pay before you apply, and applying is free: browse them at /jobs.

Questions
Is there a free virtual assistant course in the Philippines?
Yes, the TESDA Online Program is free, with modules on social media content, digital marketing and graphic design. Alison's Working as a Virtual Assistant course is free to study too.
Do clients ask for a VA certificate?
None of the 30 roles open on DayShift on 6 October 2026 asked for one. They asked for tools like Google Sheets, Canva or a CRM, clear English and, for some roles, years of experience.
How long does virtual assistant training take?
Alison lists its VA course at 1.5 to 3 hours, and Canva's short courses take about an hour each. After that, practice on a sample until you can do the task without the lesson open.
Should I pay a training fee to get a VA job?
No, because a fee to get hired or trained is a common scam sign. DayShift never asks applicants to pay anything, whether it's an application fee, a placement fee or a training fee.
