Bank teller job description: what you'll do and what to write on your resume

Applying for a bank teller job at a branch near you? Copy the duties below into your resume, then read what the interview asks.

Duties to write on your resume

Start each line with what you did. Keep the ones you've really done.

No bank experience? Use the same lines for handling cash at a school canteen, a family store or a cashier job, and say where.

A resume objective you can adapt

Business graduate looking for a bank teller job, careful with cash and records, ready to serve customers politely at the counter every day.

Skills employers ask for

What the interview asks

  1. Why do you want to work as a bank teller? Talk about liking numbers and helping people, then name something real about the branch.
  2. What would you do if your drawer is short at the end of the day? Recount first, check your slips, then report it to your supervisor right away. Never hide it.
  3. How do you handle a customer who is angry about a long line? Say sorry, stay calm, and keep serving one person at a time.
  4. A customer asks you to skip an ID check because they are in a hurry. What do you do? Be kind but firm. Rules protect the customer and the bank, so you follow them every time.

The questions every interview asks, with sample answers

How to get hired

  1. Most posts ask for a college degree, often in accounting or business. Some accept college graduates from other courses.
  2. Prepare a resume, a valid ID, an NBI clearance and your SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG and TIN numbers.
  3. Apply on the bank's career page, through job sites, or by dropping your resume at a branch.
  4. Expect a short interview, and sometimes a math or cash counting test.
  5. Some banks also ask for a medical certificate before you start.

What the work is like

You sit at a counter most of the day and handle cash while people wait in line. Payday and month end bring long queues, and one counting mistake stays with you until the drawer balances.

Questions

Do I need experience to work as a bank teller?

Not always. Many banks hire fresh graduates and train them on the system. Some posts prefer cashier or customer service experience, so mention it if you have it.

Is bank teller work part-time?

Mostly full-time, on branch hours. A few branches hire part-time or contractual tellers when it gets busy.

What should I study to become a bank teller?

Most posts ask for a college degree in a business course, like accounting or business administration. Good math and careful habits count as much as the course.
