Skills employers ask for

What the interview asks

  1. Why do you want to work in sales? Say you like talking to people and working toward a target, and give one real example.
  2. How do you handle a customer who says no? Say you ask what worries them, answer it politely and follow up later.
  3. Tell me about a time you convinced someone to buy or agree. Use a real story from school, work or an online shop, and say what you did.
  4. What would you do if you were behind on your target? Say you check your leads, make more calls and ask your manager for advice.

How to get hired

  1. Most posts ask for at least a college degree or some college units, but some accept senior high school graduates with sales experience.
  2. Prepare a resume, a valid ID and your government numbers such as SSS, PhilHealth, Pag-IBIG and TIN.
  3. Many employers also ask for an NBI clearance and a medical certificate before your start date.
  4. Apply online or send your resume to the company directly. Expect a phone or video screening first.
  5. Expect an interview, and sometimes a short role-play where you try to sell a product to the interviewer.

What the work is like

You talk to customers all day, by phone, chat or in person, and you work toward targets set each week or month. The hard part is hearing no often and still staying friendly on the next call.
