Skills for a virtual assistant, and how to prove each one

The soft skills and tools 32 open VA job posts asked for, and how to prove each one in your application, a trial task or the interview.

The skills a remote virtual assistant gets hired for are mostly habits. Clients want someone who works without being checked on, writes clearly, gets details right and turns up for the hours agreed. The tools come second, usually a CRM, a spreadsheet and, for creative roles, Canva or a video editor. We counted both in the 32 job posts open on DayShift on 12 October 2026. Below is each skill and a way to prove it before a client has to take your word for it.

The soft skills VA job posts ask for most

Clients write the same few words into their posts again and again. Here's how often each one came up in the 32 DayShift posts we read on 12 October 2026:

Bigger surveys agree. In the World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, seven out of 10 companies called analytical thinking essential, followed by resilience, flexibility and agility. In the Philippines, Republic Act No. 11927 of 2022 lists good communication, problem solving, collaboration, and flexibility and adaptability among the skills new jobs require.

How to show each soft skill in your application and interview

Anyone can type "hardworking and detail-oriented" into a CV, so the words alone prove nothing. For each skill, give the client one thing to see in your application and one short story to tell in the interview.

Working on your own

A client hires a VA so they can stop checking on the work. A part-time admin role can mean 4 hours a day alone with an inbox, and the client needs to know you'll keep going without a nudge.

Clear written English

Your emails and chat messages are the work, so the client reads your writing long before they hear your voice. That makes your application your first writing sample.

Second-language English is fine. What a client wants is a message they can act on in one read, without writing back to ask what you meant, so use the plain word.

Attention to detail

Clients often test this one before you know it's a test.

Reliability

Most of these roles are part-time with a fixed load. On 12 October 2026, 25 of the 32 DayShift posts were part-time, and many named the hours, from 10 hours a week for 2 short videos to 4 hours a day of admin. Reliable means those hours happen every week.

Staying organised

Taking feedback

Video clients expect more than one round of edits, so they want to know how you take a note.

The hard skills that go with them

Tools are easier to learn than habits, and posts usually list them second. Here's what the 32 DayShift posts named on 12 October 2026:

None of the 32 asked for a typing speed or a certificate. They asked what you can do with the tool.

Picking up a new tool fast counts too. The same World Economic Forum report from 2025 names AI and big data as the fastest-growing skills to 2030, with curiosity and lifelong learning also rising. When a post names a tool you haven't used, spend an evening on its free tutorial, then say so in your application.

To prove a tool, make one small sample of real work with it: a customer tracker in Google Sheets with a filter and a total, five Canva posts for a real local shop, or a 30-second CapCut edit. On your CV, put the tool inside the sentence where you used it. "Logged every call outcome in the CRM" beats a row of 20 logos.

Trial tasks and portfolios: where skills get checked

Some clients skip the talking and test you. On 12 October 2026, 4 of the 32 DayShift posts mentioned a trial task, all for video work, and 2 asked for a portfolio or showreel. Treat a trial task like a day on the job:

  1. Read the brief twice, and ask one clear question if something's missing.
  2. Deliver before the deadline, in the format they asked for.
  3. Add two lines at the end: what you did, and what you'd change with more time.

A trial task is a small piece of work. Nobody legit asks you to pay to take one, or to buy a course before you're allowed to apply.

Skills you already have from a BPO or office job

If you're coming off a US night shift account, you have most of this list already. You learned it under other names, so rename it on your CV:

Example CV line for an ex-BPO agent: "Handled about 60 inbound calls a day for a US telco account and logged each one in the CRM, with QA scores above target." Put a line like that under your last job. Our guide to leaving the graveyard shift covers the rest of the move.

When a client asks about your strengths, pick one skill from this guide and tell the story that proves it. Our guide to strengths and weaknesses has sample answers for VA, admin and video roles.

Want someone to read your application first?

RA 11927 tells every Public Employment Service Office (PESO) to create a digital application help desk, where job seekers can ask for feedback or help with a job application. Ask your city or municipal PESO whether theirs is running.

Then apply where the hours suit you. DayShift lists remote day shift roles with clients in Singapore and Asia, on daytime hours in Manila and Kuala Lumpur, and applying is free. Pick a post that asks for skills you can prove, and find it on the job board.
